Bethan Turner’s Transformative Art is Nothing Short of Magical
Bethan is a young woman from England who’s faced — and overcome — a host of challenges in her desire to pursue her gift for art. Her dad, David Turner, says “Bethan has not had it easy. My wife and I have fought for her to be accepted in mainstream schools, colleges and Universities, when many ‘experts’ said she wouldn’t be able to cope. She always proved them wrong.”
Bethan obtained a 2:1 degree in fine art at Sunderland University, and with the help of Princes Trust, has set up her own art business. She has a small studio in an old office block in Thornaby, North Yorkshire, where she goes to paint each day. Her unusual and stunning portraits, her specialty, incorporate various items relating to the individual, over which she paints him or her, to tell a rich, vibrant story . . . like this one:
In Bethan’s Words . . .
“My art shows my interest in four areas in popular culture — film, music, sport and TV,” says Bethan. I paint portraits of well-known public figures in those areas such as Robert Downey Jr., Jay McGuiness, Adele, Lewis Hamilton, Aidan Turner, Kit Harrington, Aliona Vilani and the late Mohammed Ali and Alan Rickman. I combine painting and collage into my work, to give a new and modern way of doing portraiture.
“When I create my portraits I try to show how I see the subject through the characters they portray in films or TV, the type of music they play, the sport they play or from the TV show they been in.
“I always start with the collage background and include pictures of the subject, items that I think relates to them, or the character they are playing or the sport they participate in. I then paint their portrait over the collage background. It gives my painting texture and depth.
“I have had comments and feedback back from some of the subjects I have painted. Robert Plant said my painting of him was ‘good work’ but I think he would have liked it better if I had painted him with a happy face. Jay McGuiness from the boy band “The Wanted” and Strictly Come Dancing Champion 2015 ‘liked’ my black and white portrait of him on Instagram. Aliona Vilani, a professional dancer from Strictly Come Dancing, ‘liked’ my portrait of her on Twitter and hasshown it to all her followers on Twitter. Karen Clifton, another professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing, put a gold coloured heart on my portrait of her on Twitter.”
